VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH March 2010

by Alpine Summit ·

Harriet Brown-Stark

Harriet was born and raised in Rockford and graduated from East High school in 1945.  She was an executive secretary at Sundstrand Corporation with CPS (Certified Professional Secretary) certification for 32 years. The last seven she was in Human Resources where she designed and taught many classes to employees including orientation of new employees, stress management, memory, how to write better memos, listening skills, etc.  Many of these were taught as evening classes at Rock Valley College and she served as moderator of the Rockford Chamber of Commerce Leadership School.

Harriet was married to Clarence Miller in Rockford and had two sons, Curt and Mark Miller.  They each have three children and all live in the Rockford area.  She has one great grandchild, Maggie May, who is eight years old.  She was also married to Arthur Brown for 30 years.  Arthur died in 1991 after a long illness.  And, of course, she’s been happily married to Stanley Stark for the last two years.

Harriet started attending Alpine in 1948 when Curt was two years old.  Almost immediately she was asked to teach the pre-schoolers.  After a few years she “graduated” to teaching 5th graders and continued in that capacity for 18 years.  She taught in several locations — Sylvan Road, Masonic Temple, Thompson School, in our church basement, and finally in our new educational wing.  She joined Alpine in 1955 after the church moved to its present location.

Harriet served as a member of council where she was the secretary and eventually was voted the first woman president of the church.  For many years she has been on the Evangelism-Outreach committee.  The committee initiated the Lenten Soup Suppers, delivering cookies to visitors, International Dinners, Madrigal Dinners, and “Alpine Alive!” a series of weekly classes.  Harriet has been involved in many fundraisers from carpeting Fellowship Hall, air conditioning, updating the “Feast of Love” cook book in 1997, and the 2004 Extreme Makeover.  For 13 years she has had a wonderful group of Alpine members join her in presenting the RSVP 7-week BABES puppet lessons to kindergarteners in the Alpine Academy.  She enjoys taking pictures of new members and random photos at church.

Aside from Alpine, Harriet is a charter member and serves as secretary for two investment clubs, both of whom have Alpine members.  The Wise Investment Club meets monthly at Alpine; Points Plus meets at Wells Fargo.    Anyone interested in learning more about investing through a club should call her – 815/399-8494.  She is active in the Sundstrand Retirees and takes pictures of attendees at every monthly meeting.

She has enjoyed every minute as a member of Alpine and thanks her Alpine connections for giving her the opportunity to serve while exploring her creativity.

We thank Harriet for her dedication to our church, and we thank God for her…….Congratulations!
