Looking for a slightly used desk or table? Why not visit the Habitat ReStore in North Towne Mall. They sell new and used building supplies – reusing good materials that won’t end up in a landfill. This is a major fundraiser for Habitat. They are open Wed. through Sat., 10-6 and 10-4 on Sat.

Replace the rubber insert on door thresholds if it is collapsed. This keeps the warm air in, and the cold air out.

Wait for the full load. Whether cleaning dishes or washing clothes, run your machine only when you have a full load.

Help to lower your heating costs. Keep drapes open in sunny weather and close them at night to keep the heat in.

An LCD flat panel TV uses as little as a third of the electricity of conventional tube-based models. So consider purchasing an LCD TV if you are replacing your old TV.

If you had a fresh tree for Christmas, you can recycle it not only through your city’s tree recycle program but also around your home. You can cut the branches off and lay them over perennials to help control temperature fluctuations and guard against winter weather. You can also chop the tree into firewood or chips to keep your house warm. A standard sized tree can be turned into 13 pounds of firewood.

Save 5% for every degree you turn down your thermostat in the winter.

Check your dishwasher settings. Choose “air dry” or “no heat dry” settings to save energy.
