Active Waiting
by Alpine Summit ·
Waiting is often equated with wasted time. It just doesn’t seem productive to wait in line, in traffic or for a loved one, so why on earth would the church structure in an entire season of waiting? The church year includes a season of waiting, known as Advent, to teach us that waiting is not wasted time, but an essential part of life we can actively embrace. Active waiting involves anticipation, preparation, and openness. We anticipate Christmas by renewing our wonder of God choosing to enter our world by being born Jesus, the son of Mary. We prepare ourselves and families to celebrate Jesus’ birth by taking stock of how faith affects every aspect of our lives. And finally we are open to the unexpected. John the Baptist was a good example. God chose a camel-hair wearing, bug eating wild man to prepare the way for Jesus two thousand years ago so we cannot rely on God to use “comfortable” or “normal” means to reach us. The active waiting of Advent will look different for each and every one of us. It might be reading our Advent devotional after a family sit-down dinner, singing a Christmas carol while stuck in traffic, or volunteering to help prepare and serve meals at an area soup kitchen. Happy waiting!
